Have you set up scope-divided emission factors and want to know how to link them to your meters in Mestro? This article shows you how to create environmental agreements with the correct scope, handle tenants, and find your emissions in the portal.
How to set up an environmental agreement with scopes in Mestro
To link an emission factor (g CO2e/kWh) to a property or meter, you need to create an agreement with an emissions contract item in the Cost and environmental agreements tool. Create one agreement per energy source (e.g. one per district heating company). Add separate contract items for each scope:
- Scope 1 — combustion of on-site fuel (e.g. pellet boiler)
- Scope 2 — combustion at the energy producer (purchased energy)
- Scope 3 — fuel production and transport
Note: the unit for emission factors in Mestro is g CO2e/kWh. After linking agreements to meters, allow some time for the system to calculate the secondary data before checking the results in reports.
Example: tenant emissions
There are two approaches when setting up agreements for tenant energy use:
Option 1 — Tenant's perspective on scope: Set up agreements the same way as for your own meters (scope 2 for combustion, scope 3 for production/transport). Filter by tenant energy tagging to identify what falls in your scope 3 as property owner. Advantage: emissions are split by scope for tenants. Requires meter tagging to separate property and tenant energy.
Option 2 — Property owner's perspective on scope: Place the entire tenant emission factor as scope 3. Link this agreement to all meters measuring tenant energy. Advantage: all calculated emissions are always from the property owner's perspective, no tagging required. Disadvantage: tenant emissions are not split by sub-scope.
Where do I see my scopes in the portal?
Once agreements are linked to meters, go to the Sustainability report and download it to Excel/CSV. In the downloaded file, navigate to the Environmental impact tab. Here you will find emissions broken down by scope and by property energy vs tenant energy. Make sure you are positioned at the right level in the property structure to include all relevant objects.
